Decide on location and height

Find the studs

Use a stud finder to locate studs behind the wall. Mark both edges of each stud with light pencil marks. Studs are typically 16 inches apart in newer homes, 24 inches in some older homes.

Mounting into studs is always the strongest option. Plan bracket locations to hit studs if possible.
Determine mounting strategy

If brackets can hit studs, you'll use wood screws directly into studs. If no studs are available, choose anchors based on weight: plastic anchors for light loads (under 15 lbs), toggle bolts for heavier loads.

Mark bracket positions

Hold up the first bracket at your marked height. Use a level to ensure it's straight. Mark the screw holes with a pencil. For the second bracket, measure the shelf length and mark at the same height using the level.

Install anchors if needed

Attach brackets

Align bracket holes with pilot holes or anchors. Drive screws in but don't fully tighten yet. Check level again and adjust if needed before fully tightening all screws.

Don't overtighten screws in drywall anchors - they can pull through.
Install the shelf

Place the shelf on the brackets. Some brackets have screws to secure the shelf from below - install these if present. Check that the shelf is level.
