Step-by-Step Instructions
Prepare the crack

Use a utility knife to widen the crack slightly into a V-shape (this helps the compound grip). Remove any loose material. Clean away dust and debris.

For hairline cracks, you may skip the V-cut and go straight to taping.
Apply mesh tape
5 minutes
Center the fiberglass mesh tape directly over the crack. Press firmly along the entire length. The tape prevents the crack from reappearing.

For corner cracks, use pre-creased corner tape or fold regular tape in half.
Apply first coat of joint compound
10 minutes
Spread joint compound over the tape, pressing it into the mesh. Extend the compound 3-4 inches on either side of the tape. Smooth with long strokes.
Let dry and sand

Allow to dry completely (usually overnight). Sand lightly to smooth. Wipe away dust.
