Plan detector locations

Smoke detectors: install one in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home. CO detectors: one on every level, near sleeping areas. Ceiling mount is preferred.

Avoid bad locations

Keep detectors: at least 4 inches from wall/ceiling junction, away from windows and doors (drafts cause false alarms), not in kitchens (cooking smoke) or bathrooms (steam). CO detectors should not be directly above fuel-burning appliances.

Mark mounting position

Hold the mounting base plate against the ceiling. Mark the screw holes with a pencil. If possible, try to hit a ceiling joist for the strongest mount.

Drill pilot holes

If mounting to a joist, drill small pilot holes. If mounting to drywall only, drill holes sized for wall anchors. For ceiling drywall, toggle anchors work well.

Attach mounting plate

Screw the base plate to the ceiling. If using anchors, insert them first. Ensure the plate is secure and doesn't wobble.

Install batteries

Insert batteries into the detector, noting correct orientation (+/-). Some detectors have 10-year sealed batteries - no battery installation needed for these.
