Determine switch type needed

If ONE switch controls the light, you need a single-pole dimmer. If TWO switches control the same light, you need a 3-way dimmer. Check your situation before buying.

Turn off power at the breaker

Turn off the breaker for this circuit. Test the switch to confirm the light doesn't turn on. Then test with a voltage tester at the switch to verify no power.

NEVER work on electrical with power on. Always verify with a voltage tester.
Remove cover plate and old switch

Unscrew the cover plate. Remove the screws holding the switch to the electrical box. Gently pull the switch out, being careful not to touch any wires until you've tested them.
Test wires again and note connections

With the switch pulled out, test all wires with your voltage tester to confirm no power. Take a photo of how wires connect to the old switch before disconnecting.

Standard wiring: black (hot), white (neutral - may or may not be connected to switch), green or bare (ground). On 3-way switches, you'll have two traveler wires plus a common wire.

On the old switch, the common terminal is usually a different color (often black screw instead of brass).
Disconnect old switch

Unscrew the terminal screws to release the wires, or if they're pushed into holes in the back, insert a small screwdriver into the release slot while pulling the wire.
Connect the dimmer

Follow the dimmer's instructions. Typically: connect the green dimmer wire to the ground wire, connect the black dimmer wires to the hot wires (for single-pole, they're interchangeable). Use wire nuts and wrap with electrical tape.

Most dimmers have wire leads rather than screw terminals - you'll twist wires together and cap with wire nuts.
Install the dimmer

Carefully fold the wires back into the electrical box. Screw the dimmer into the box. Attach the cover plate. Install the dimmer knob if it's a separate piece.
Restore power and test

Turn the breaker back on. Test the dimmer through its full range. If lights flicker, verify you're using dimmable bulbs.

Not all bulbs are dimmable! You need bulbs labeled 'dimmable LED' or incandescent bulbs.
